Ever since Katie’s first year of preschool, we’ve made a tradition of celebrating the end of summer with a special family outing. This year, Katie begged us to drive out to Weeki Wachee to see the mermaids in their underwater theater.

A visit to Weeki Wachee has been on my Florida bucket list for years, but we’ve just never gotten around to seeing it. I half expected it to be another dilapidated roadside attraction that was a far cry from its glory days. So it was a pleasant surprise to see that it has been beautifully preserved and is still very popular. (We got there well before it opened, and there were already hundreds of families in the ticket line.)

You are immersed in old Florida Charm from the moment you set eyes on the mermaid statues that line the park’s border. And with the addition of a small spring-fed water park, you could easily spend the entire day in the tropical oasis.

Sadly our day was cut short by bad weather, but that just leaves more for us to experience when we bring the cousins next year!
